Electronic Spin Resonance (ESR)
E
ESR is the main technique to study free radicals.
These are characterized with the presence of a free electron which rotates on himself. This rotation movement defines an intrinsec angular moment named
spin.
If the free radical is placed into a magnetic field matching the spin rotation frequency, there will be an energy absorption visualised with the ESR spectrometer.

The obtained signal will be a fingerprint from each type of free radical (in the case of spin-trapping experiment) or from the used spin-probe.
Spin probes being aspecific, there will only be a global measurement of free radicals concentration.
Using free radicals-specific chelating agents allows to estimate the respective parts of different free radicals family.
Spin-trap are free radicals-specific chelating agent and whose ESR spectrum is a fingerprint of the free radical.
