PCS (Particle Counter Sizer) aerosol sizer allows to measure the particular concentration of an aerosol per size classes. The obtained result is the studied aerosol size distribution which covers from 0.2µm to 40µm. Particle sizing is obtained from optical measure of scattered light intensity (Mie theory) and particular concentration by optical event counting.
Ahigh-pressure Xe lamp enlights a rectangular hole which is highly focused with convergent optical lenses on measurement volume. The volume measurement size is very thin ( about 0.01 mm3 which allows to measure concentrations up to 105 particles per cm3 without optical collisions.

Particle's 90°-scattered light is detected with two photomultipliers whose angular selectivity is limited with two rectangular holes. The one from the second photomultiplier is slightly larger than the one from the first photomultiplier. Then, this configuration allows to distinguish particles which are totally or partially enlighted by the light source. We then take into account side-effects causing error which would tend to bias the size distribution by under-estimating particle size..
