TEOM : Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance

TEOM (tapered element oscillating microbalance) measure system allow to measure massic particular concentration from an aerosol. It may be used with a front cyclone to select PM2.5 or PM1 size fraction.

I ts operating principle is based on an oscillating microbalance linked to a collection filter whose oscillating frequency is measured. Along the experiment, the filters collects all the particulate matter carried by the aerosol into the apparatus. This particulate matter will progressively encumber the whole system (filter + microbalance), which will cause a reduction of its oscillating frequency. This variation is directly linked to the mass variation onto the filter. Then the mass concentration is calculated on the basis of temporal integration.
